Burnout Counselling In Surrey, BC

Burnout Counselling

If you’re running on fumes, waking up tired, or finding that even small tasks feel like too much, you might be dealing with burnout. It’s not just about needing a good night’s sleep or taking a week off work. Burnout is a deeper kind of exhaustion that affects your mental health, body, and emotions all at once. This type of chronic stress can cause both emotional exhaustion and physical symptoms that interfere with your personal life, work, and relationships.

At Love This Therapy, our mental health professionals understand how overwhelming it can be to feel this way. Through compassionate burnout counselling in Surrey, BC, we help you slow down, catch your breath, and begin your burnout recovery journey.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged or excessive stress. It often occurs when the demands of work, caregiving, or life outweigh your available energy and support systems. Over time, these stressors pile up, leaving you detached, ineffective, and unable to recharge.

Unlike everyday stress, which fades when a situation passes, burnout lingers. It can seep into every corner of your life, disrupting your sleep patterns, mood, and motivation. When burnout occurs, you may start noticing warning signs such as fatigue, irritability, and reduced personal accomplishment. Recognizing burnout early can make a huge difference, allowing you to prevent burnout before it worsens and to begin working with a therapist to restore your sense of well-being.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Burnout looks different for everyone, but some common burnout symptoms include:

  • Emotional exhaustion: feeling drained, hopeless, or unable to cope

  • Physical symptoms: disrupted sleep patterns, headaches, muscle tension, or frequent illness

  • Cognitive overload: difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or constant worry

  • Detachment: pulling away from relationships or losing touch with your purpose

  • Loss of motivation: struggling to care about work, responsibilities, or once-enjoyable activities

  • Irritability and cynicism: increased irritability, snapping at others, or maintaining a negative outlook

Even if you only relate to a few symptoms of burnout, you may still be experiencing burnout. Counselling provides space to explore these physical signs and emotional patterns while learning how to cope effectively and overcome burnout in a supportive environment.

How Counselling Can Help

Counselling for burnout isn’t about “fixing” you, it’s about providing rest, reflection, and realistic stress reduction techniques. With the guidance of a trained therapist, you’ll learn to:

  • Understand the root causes and factors that contribute to your burnout

  • Reconnect with your values and personal goals

  • Develop healthier boundaries and set boundaries around work and technology

  • Learn practical self-care habits and stress management strategies

  • Reclaim energy, motivation, and balance

Our mental health professionals support you in shifting from survival mode toward a life that feels both fulfilling and manageable. Whether you’re facing work-related burnout, compassion fatigue, or ongoing chronic stress, burnout counselling can help you rebuild your confidence and rediscover joy.

Therapeutic Modalities We Use

At Love This Therapy, our counsellors tailor treatment to your individual needs using evidence-based and holistic approaches designed to tackle burnout and enhance well-being.

Burnout often comes with self-doubt and harsh inner criticism (“I should be doing more”). CBT helps you challenge these thoughts and replace them with healthier perspectives. This approach reduces negative outlooks, improves self-esteem, and empowers you to cope effectively with stress and work-related stressors.

Mindfulness helps calm a racing mind and restore balance to your body. By staying in the present moment, you’ll learn to pause and respond instead of react. Over time, mindfulness enhances self-care, reduces anxiety, and supports burnout recovery by restoring inner peace and clarity.

Sometimes burnout stems from underlying issues or unprocessed emotions like sadness, anger, or shame. EFT allows you to access and transform these emotions, releasing what’s been weighing you down and promoting emotional healing.

Chronic stress often lives in the body, showing up as muscle tension, shallow breathing, or fatigue. Somatic therapy helps you reconnect with your physical sensations, regulate your nervous system, and rebuild a sense of safety and vitality.

Burnout can make your identity feel tied to your productivity. Narrative therapy helps you re-author your story — moving from “I’m burned out” to “I’m rediscovering my strength.” This shift encourages growth and a renewed sense of meaning in both your career and personal life.

IFS explores how different parts of you – the overachiever, the inner critic, the part longing for rest – interact. By integrating these parts with compassion, you create harmony and open the door to deeper self compassion and well-being.

What to Expect from Counselling

Your journey will start with an intake session, where you’ll share your experiences and what you’re hoping for. From there, we’ll work together to create a plan tailored to your needs. Counselling may include:

  • Gentle exploration of what led to burnout
  • Practical strategies to lower stress and restore energy
  • Support in setting healthy boundaries and creating balance
  • Tools to reconnect with meaning, joy, and purpose

You set the pace. Some clients come for short-term support to get through a tough season; others choose longer-term counselling for deeper healing and resilience building. Whatever your needs, we’re here to walk alongside you.

Strategies to Help with Burnout (Beyond Counselling)

While counselling can be a powerful part of recovery, there are also everyday practices you can weave into your life to support healing and prevent burnout from worsening. These strategies are backed by research and can complement the work you do in therapy:

Chronic stress disrupts the body’s natural rhythms. Studies show that good-quality sleep is essential for restoring energy, regulating mood, and improving cognitive function (Walker, 2017). Try to create a consistent bedtime routine, reduce screen time before bed, and give yourself permission to rest without guilt.
Exercise doesn’t have to mean an intense workout. Even a brisk walk, gentle yoga, or dancing in your living room can reduce stress hormones and boost endorphins (Sharma et al., 2006). Movement helps discharge pent-up tension in your body and replenishes energy.
Burnout often thrives in isolation. Social support is a proven buffer against stress (Cohen & Wills, 1985). Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues you feel safe with. Sometimes just talking about what you’re going through can lighten the load.
Short, intentional pauses throughout the day—such as taking a few deep breaths, stepping outside, or practicing a two-minute meditation—can calm the nervous system and reduce overwhelm (Kabat-Zinn, 1990). These mini breaks can add up to big changes in how you feel.
Research shows that constant connectivity (emails, notifications, late-night work) contributes to burnout (Derks et al., 2014). Try setting limits—like turning off work emails after hours or carving out device-free time each evening—to create clearer boundaries between work and rest.
Burnout can make life feel like it’s all about duties and demands. Reintroducing activities that bring joy, creativity, or meaning—gardening, reading, art, music, volunteering—helps replenish your sense of purpose and counters the emptiness of burnout (Ryff & Singer, 1998).
A balanced diet can play a role in resilience to stress. Research highlights the link between nutrition and mental health—particularly the benefits of whole foods, omega-3 fatty acids, and reducing processed sugars (Jacka et al., 2017). Eating well is one more way to support your body’s healing.
Burnout often comes when we’re living in ways that conflict with our values. Reflecting on what truly matters to you—and making small adjustments to align your actions with those values—has been shown to reduce stress and improve wellbeing (Creswell et al., 2005).
