Burnout Counselling In Surrey, BC

Burnout Counselling

If you’re running on fumes, waking up tired, or finding that even small tasks feel like too much, you might be dealing with burnout. It’s not just about needing a good night’s sleep or a week off work, it’s the kind of exhaustion that seeps into your body, your mind, and your spirit. At Love This Therapy, we know how heavy that can feel, and we want you to know you don’t have to go through it alone. Together, we can help you slow down, catch your breath, and start building a life that feels liveable again.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress. It often arises when the demands of work, caregiving, or life in general outweigh your resources and support. Over time, the stress piles up, leaving you feeling detached, ineffective, and unable to recharge. Unlike everyday stress which tends to fade once a challenge passes, burnout lingers. It can seep into every corner of your life, making even small tasks feel overwhelming.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Burnout shows up differently for everyone, but common signs include:

  • Emotional exhaustion: feeling drained, hopeless, or unable to cope
  • Physical fatigue: difficulty sleeping, headaches, body aches, or frequent illness
  • Cognitive overload: difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, or constant worry
  • Detachment: withdrawing from relationships or feeling disconnected from your purpose
  • Loss of motivation: struggling to care about work, responsibilities, or things you used to enjoy
  • Irritability and cynicism: snapping at loved ones or feeling negative about everything

You don’t need to check every box to be experiencing burnout. If you recognize yourself in even some of these signs, counselling can help you untangle what’s going on and find relief.

How Counselling Can Help

Counselling for burnout isn’t about “fixing” you it’s about giving you space to rest, reflect, and rebuild. In a supportive environment, you’ll learn to:

  • Understand the root causes of your burnout
  • Reconnect with your values and what matters most to you
  • Develop healthier boundaries around work, relationships, and responsibilities
  • Learn practical stress-management skills and coping strategies
  • Reclaim energy, motivation, and a sense of possibility

Burnout counselling provides both immediate relief and long-term tools for resilience. It helps you move from survival mode into a life that feels more sustainable and meaningful.

Therapeutic Modalities We Use

At Love This Therapy, we tailor counselling to your unique needs. Here are some of the approaches we may use to support you in healing from burnout:

Burnout often comes with harsh self-criticism and unhelpful thought patterns (“I should be able to handle this,” “If I stop, I’ll fall behind”). CBT helps you recognize and challenge these patterns, making space for kinder, more realistic perspectives. With CBT, you’ll learn practical tools to reduce overwhelm and rebuild confidence.
Burnout keeps your mind racing and your body tense. Mindfulness practices gently guide you back into the present moment, teaching you to pause, notice, and respond with greater calm. Over time, mindfulness helps regulate stress, improves sleep, and restores a sense of balance.
Sometimes burnout isn’t just about workload, it’s about unprocessed emotions such as anger, sadness, or shame that get buried under “pushing through.” EFT offers a safe space to access, understand, and transform these emotions, freeing you from the internal weight that fuels exhaustion.
Stress doesn’t just live in your mind; it lives in your body. Somatic therapy helps you tune into physical sensations (tight shoulders, racing heart, shallow breath) and gently releases them. This approach helps rebuild a sense of safety and ease in your nervous system.
Burnout can make your identity feel tied to performance and productivity. Narrative therapy invites you to re-author your story—shifting the focus from “burned out worker” to whole, complex person with strengths, values, and dreams. It helps you step outside of burnout’s grip and reclaim your voice.
When you’re burned out, different parts of yourself may feel in conflict—the part that pushes to achieve, the part that longs to rest, the part that feels guilty. IFS helps you understand and integrate these parts with compassion, creating more harmony within yourself and fostering lasting change.

What to Expect from Counselling

Your journey will start with an intake session, where you’ll share your experiences and what you’re hoping for. From there, we’ll work together to create a plan tailored to your needs. Counselling may include:

  • Gentle exploration of what led to burnout
  • Practical strategies to lower stress and restore energy
  • Support in setting healthy boundaries and creating balance
  • Tools to reconnect with meaning, joy, and purpose

You set the pace. Some clients come for short-term support to get through a tough season; others choose longer-term counselling for deeper healing and resilience building. Whatever your needs, we’re here to walk alongside you.

Strategies to Help with Burnout (Beyond Counselling)

While counselling can be a powerful part of recovery, there are also everyday practices you can weave into your life to support healing and prevent burnout from worsening. These strategies are backed by research and can complement the work you do in therapy:

Chronic stress disrupts the body’s natural rhythms. Studies show that good-quality sleep is essential for restoring energy, regulating mood, and improving cognitive function (Walker, 2017). Try to create a consistent bedtime routine, reduce screen time before bed, and give yourself permission to rest without guilt.
Exercise doesn’t have to mean an intense workout. Even a brisk walk, gentle yoga, or dancing in your living room can reduce stress hormones and boost endorphins (Sharma et al., 2006). Movement helps discharge pent-up tension in your body and replenishes energy.
Burnout often thrives in isolation. Social support is a proven buffer against stress (Cohen & Wills, 1985). Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues you feel safe with. Sometimes just talking about what you’re going through can lighten the load.
Short, intentional pauses throughout the day—such as taking a few deep breaths, stepping outside, or practicing a two-minute meditation—can calm the nervous system and reduce overwhelm (Kabat-Zinn, 1990). These mini breaks can add up to big changes in how you feel.
Research shows that constant connectivity (emails, notifications, late-night work) contributes to burnout (Derks et al., 2014). Try setting limits—like turning off work emails after hours or carving out device-free time each evening—to create clearer boundaries between work and rest.
Burnout can make life feel like it’s all about duties and demands. Reintroducing activities that bring joy, creativity, or meaning—gardening, reading, art, music, volunteering—helps replenish your sense of purpose and counters the emptiness of burnout (Ryff & Singer, 1998).
A balanced diet can play a role in resilience to stress. Research highlights the link between nutrition and mental health—particularly the benefits of whole foods, omega-3 fatty acids, and reducing processed sugars (Jacka et al., 2017). Eating well is one more way to support your body’s healing.
Burnout often comes when we’re living in ways that conflict with our values. Reflecting on what truly matters to you—and making small adjustments to align your actions with those values—has been shown to reduce stress and improve wellbeing (Creswell et al., 2005).
