An autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment is a specialist type of one-on-one assessment administered by a trained psychologist, following the assessment requirements of the BC Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN).
This assessment process involves a standardized battery measuring cognitive, intellectual and adaptive functioning, as well as traits of autism spectrum disorder using the ADOS-2 and ADI-R measures. These standardized tests are combined with clinical interviews, observations, and a review of historical records to help understand you or your child’s symptoms. If criteria are met, a formal diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder will be given.
ASD assessments must be conducted in person.
Areas covered during the diagnostic assessment will include:
Intelligence and Cognitive functioning
Adaptive behavioral functioning
Executive functioning abilities
Developmental history
School performance and functioning
Symptoms specific to autism spectrum disorder (including social interaction, communication, and repetitive/restricted behaviors) using ADOS-2 and ADI-R
The process of an ASD assessment includes the following:
1 hour clinical intake interview (in-person or virtual)
6 hours psychological testing ( one in-person 2 hour session, one in-person 1 hour session, and one virtual 3 hour session)
50 minute feedback session (in-person or virtual – could be broken down to include a 40 min parent and 10 min child feedback session)
Questionnaire covering a range of symptom domains
Scoring and Report writing
The base fee for an ASD assessment is $4,254. ASD assessments for adults aged 20+ can remove the intelligence/cognitive functioning portion for a reduced cost assessment.
Assessment of other types of neurodevelopmental disorders, or additional mental health disorders, will require additional testing sessions, scoring, and report writing, charged on top of the base fee. If you would like additional queries to be added to your base ASD assessment, your fee will be calculated by an hourly rate, covering testing for all of your individual concerns. This will help keep your costs lower than seeking multiple different types of assessments.
The psychologist will discuss an individualized assessment plan with you in your first session, including estimated fees.
Obtaining an autism diagnosis through qualified specialists is crucial for accessing critical support and resources. Early autism assessments are vital in identifying children who may be on the autism spectrum or who might have other developmental disabilities. By using reliable tools, professionals can detect early signs of developmental differences, ensuring that children receive the necessary support as early as possible.
With our autism assessment, you will receive a comprehensive diagnostic report following the assessment that will provide detailed insights into your child’s strengths and challenges. This report not only confirms the diagnosis but also outlines specific recommendations for treatment and educational strategies to help your child succeed.
