Psychotherapy at Love This Therapy

Psychotherapy is a powerful tool for fostering emotional, psychological, interpersonal, and personal growth.

Psychotherapy, or counselling, is a collaborative treatment process between a counsellor/psychologist and a client that focuses on effectively addressing concerns in a supportive and non-judgmental environment. Whether you’re dealing with ADHD, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, or seeking personal growth, our experienced team is here to not just guide you, but to walk alongside you on your mental health journey.

What Can Psychotherapy Help With?

Psychotherapy is highly versatile and effective in helping with a broad spectrum of mental health conditions and life challenges, including:

Assisting individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to improve focus, reduce impulsive behavior, and enhance organizational skills, contributing to better day-to-day functioning.
Helping individuals recognize triggers and develop healthier ways to express and manage anger. Counselling focuses on emotional regulation, communication skills, and stress reduction techniques to address underlying causes of anger and prevent it from negatively impacting relationships or personal well-being.
Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, and social anxiety can be overwhelming and interfere with daily life. Psychotherapy helps individuals develop coping strategies to manage and reduce anxiety symptoms. For children, psychotherapy is also very effective at treating separation anxiety. Exposure therapy uses behavioral techniques to help you regain control over your anxiety and be able to live your life free from impairment.
Supporting individuals with autism in managing sensory, emotional, and social challenges, helping them develop coping strategies and build upon their strengths.
Addressing issues like anger management, addictions, or self-destructive habits.
Providing support for individuals experiencing extreme mood swings, alongside treatment with medication monitored by your doctor or psychiatrist. Psychotherapy helps individuals manage manic and depressive episodes by offering coping strategies and improving emotional regulation.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) can help support individuals with BPD by building skills related to mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT helps those with BPD manage their symptoms and build a life worth living.
Providing support for individuals experiencing physical and emotional exhaustion, often related to work stress or caregiving roles. Counselling offers tools to restore balance and regain energy.
Depression, including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), and seasonal affective disorder, can leave individuals feeling hopeless and disconnected. Psychotherapy provides a safe space to explore the underlying causes of depression, build emotional resilience, and develop practical strategies for improving mood and overall well-being.
Helping those dealing with loss process their emotions and heal.
Psychotherapy can be very effective for those with chronic pain or health conditions; by helping you manage your daily symptoms of both mental and physical health and regain control of your life. It can also specifically target somatic symptoms of mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, which may be exacerbating your pain or health condition.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Exposure and Response Prevention (CBT ERP) is the recommended therapy for those struggling with OCD. CBT ERP helps individuals manage obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors by teaching strategies to reduce anxiety and control compulsions.
Enhancing self-awareness, building self-esteem, and improving overall emotional well-being.
Psychotherapy helps individuals experiencing psychosis manage symptoms such as hallucinations and delusions, providing support to improve daily functioning and quality of life. Alongside treatment with medication monitored by your doctor or psychiatrist.
Supporting both individuals and couples in navigating conflicts, improving communication, and fostering healthier connections.
Offering tools to cope with overwhelming life circumstances, work-related stress, or major life transitions.
Helping individuals process and heal from trauma.

How Does Psychotherapy Work?

Psychotherapy is tailored to each client’s unique needs. It involves regular sessions where a trained counsellor or psychologist uses various evidence-based techniques to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Here are some of the core modalities we offer at Love This Therapy:

Focuses on cognitive techniques such as identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviors, as well as behavioral techniques like exposure therapy to situations that elicit fear or anxiety. CBT is one of the strongest evidence-based treatments to help individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms for issues like anxiety and depression, and research has shown that it is as effective or more effective long-term than medication. Specialized types of CBT have also been developed to treat specific conditions, such as ADHD, chronic pain, trauma and PTSD, and psychosis.
Helps clients understand unconscious thoughts and early life experiences that influence current behavior. This approach is particularly effective for relationship issues and deep-seated emotional conflicts.
Centers on self-acceptance and personal growth. In a supportive environment, clients explore their potential and build self-compassion.
Techniques such as meditation and mindfulness exercises are integrated into therapy to help clients remain grounded in the present moment. These approaches are beneficial for managing chronic stress, anxiety, and depression.
Helps individuals manage intense emotions and impulsive behaviors, particularly those with borderline personality disorder or self-harming tendencies. DBT teaches skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Particularly effective for trauma and PTSD, EMDR uses some elements of CBT alongside visual, tactile or auditory bilateral movements (guided) to help clients process traumatic memories to completion and reduce their distressing emotional impact.
Encourages clients to accept their thoughts and feelings without avoidance, focusing on values-based living. It’s especially useful for issues such as anxiety, depression, and chronic pain.
This approach addresses the body-mind connection, helping clients process trauma and emotional distress through physical awareness and release techniques.
This modality looks at problems through the lens of family dynamics and relationships, helping to resolve conflicts and improve communication, especially in family or parenting-related issues.
A powerful modality for individuals and couples, EFT helps clients understand and transform their emotions, creating stronger emotional bonds and improving relational dynamics. It is highly effective for resolving conflicts in couples therapy and healing emotional wounds. It is also one of the evidenced based therapies recommended to treat individual depression.
Narrative therapy empowers clients to reshape their personal stories. By externalizing problems and focusing on their strengths, clients gain control over issues like anxiety, depression, and trauma.
A goal-oriented, short-term therapy that emphasizes finding practical solutions to current challenges. SFT helps clients identify their strengths and resources to resolve specific issues such as relationship struggles or work stress.
This approach integrates an understanding of the emotional, mental, and physical impact of trauma. Trauma-informed care ensures a safe, empowering environment where clients can rebuild resilience and regain control over their lives.
A research-based approach to couples therapy, the Gottman Method strengthens emotional connection and helps couples navigate conflict constructively. It focuses on improving relational safety, trust, and communication while fostering a deeper bond between partners.
Developed by Virginia Satir, this therapy focuses on improving communication and emotional expression within families. It aims to help family members gain a deeper understanding of each other, enhance self-esteem, and develop healthier ways of relating. This approach is often used to resolve conflicts and promote emotional healing within families by exploring the roles and patterns that influence family dynamics.
Behavioral therapy helps clients modify unhealthy behaviors by understanding the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and actions. This approach is often effective for treating behavioral concerns in children, such as ADHD or conduct disorders.
Using creative expression as a therapeutic tool, art therapy allows clients to process emotions and experiences visually. It’s especially beneficial for individuals who find verbal expression challenging or who have experienced trauma.
Hypnotherapy uses guided relaxation techniques to help clients communicate with their subconscious and preconscious minds, enabling them to address deep-seated fears, habits, or past traumas. It is often used to treat anxiety, phobias, or issues like smoking cessation.
Play therapy is an effective approach for children, allowing them to express their emotions and experiences through play. This therapeutic technique helps children process difficult emotions and develop coping strategies in a developmentally appropriate way.
Sand tray therapy uses the medium of a sandbox and miniature figures to allow clients to create scenes that represent their internal worlds. This modality can be particularly helpful for children and trauma survivors, offering a safe and symbolic space for processing complex emotions.

The Process of Psychotherapy

Your journey with Love This Therapy may begin with an initial 15-minute discovery call, where you and your counsellor will discuss your concerns and goals. During your first session, you’ll develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. Therapy sessions typically last 50- 60 minutes for individuals (though you can choose to make them longer) and 60-90 minutes for couples and families. Sessions are offered in-person or virtually (via video or phone), Monday through Saturday. Your sessions can be scheduled at a frequency depending on your preferences and goals, usually on a weekly or biweekly basis. Research on psychotherapy outcomes shows that it typically takes a certain number of sessions to achieve significant progress. For example, when using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), evidence suggests approximately 12-16 sessions to observe noticeable improvements. On the other hand, therapies like Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or psychodynamic approaches may require 6-12 months of ongoing sessions to see meaningful change.

Whether your focus is on resolving immediate concerns or engaging in long-term exploration, psychotherapy can meaningfully help you gain insight into your feelings and behaviors, equipping you with tools to face life’s challenges.
