Confirmation of Diagnosis: For Previous Autism Spectrum Disorder or Intellectual Developmental Disorder Assessments (conducted out of province or out of country)
An autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment is a specialist type of one-on-one assessment administered by a trained psychologist. If you have recently moved to British Columbia, your children’s previous assessment must be reviewed by a registered psychologist, pediatrician or psychiatrist, to make sure the previous assessment meets the requirements of the BC Autism Assessment Network (BCAAN). This confirmation of diagnosis is required for your child to receive support in school (such as an individual education plan or IEP), as well as government funding (autism funding or AFU), or support from Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) for young adults.
In order for your child’s previous assessment to be deemed eligible in British Columbia, it must have used both the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) measures.
Our registered psychologists at Love This Therapy can provide a confirmation of diagnosis and the required paperwork for your child’s previous ASD assessment to be accepted in British Columbia. This service includes a 1-hour charge ($282.00) which includes a brief 10-15 minute video or phone call with the parent, a thorough review of your child’s previous assessment report(s), and completion of either the Confirmation of Diagnosis form required by MCFD, or the CLBC Eligibility Form- Assessor Report (based on your inquiry). Reports conducted in a language other than English will be required to be professionally translated before your appointment.
Disclaimer: Scheduling a confirmation of diagnosis appointment does not guarantee that your child’s previous assessment will meet the criteria in British Columbia. MCFD or CLBC forms will only be filled out for assessments which meet certain criteria, based on the registered psychologist’s discretion. You must send the clinic the previous psychological assessment report and all other relevant documentation (including translations) at least 48 hours before your appointment, or it will be cancelled and charged the full cost of the appointment. This is because psychologists are not able to perform this service if they do not have access to your child’s previous assessment report(s).
There will be no refunds given for the session if your child’s assessment does not meet the criteria for confirmation of diagnosis in BC. Therefore, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you confirm their previous assessment used both the ADOS-2 and ADI-R before booking this type of session. If your child’s previous assessment did not use both the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, they will need to go through a full re-assessment for ASD. If your child’s previous assessment was deemed to not meet criteria for confirmation of diagnosis, at the end of the appointment, the psychologist will contact you to discuss next steps for a re-assessment of ASD in BC. For CLBC eligibility, please review the specific criteria for the initiative you will be applying for (developmental disabilities or personalized support initiative), to see if your child may be eligible, before booking this session.
